A Synopsis versus a Summary

Quick Literary Tip . . .

Book Synopsis: short description of what the book is about that is usually found on the back cover text and in metadata that is shared/uploaded with distributors and retailers

Book Summary: longer description that summarizes the book in its entirety—telling the beginning, middle, and end— and usually shared with literary agents, publishers, and interviewers who you want to know the gist of the book's content without them having to take the time to read the book in its entirety

A synopsis is usually around 250 words. It serves as a teaser—an appetizer, if you will—for the book.

The summary is usually multiple pages and can even be broken down per chapter.

If seeking literary representation or publication consideration, your cover letter/initial pitch can include a synopsis, but when asked for a summary, the agent and editor don't want to be teased. They want the full meal.
