I always say that you can make money as an author/publisher one book at a time or one big corporate contract at a time. Or even one big grant at a time.
The thing is, my fellow literary artists, you have to remember that your business is an entity, and so are you as an individual. There are sources you could and should be tapping into as an individual artist, as well as for your business.
Those who attended the 2018 and 2019 Act Like an Author, Think Like a Business conference were able to see just how important that was in 2020—when the pandemic hit, and grants and funding were being offered left and right. They were able to receive funding for both their author/publishing business, and their role as an indie/individual artist/author.
Below is a prime example of tapping into grant funding for your business (not as an artist/writer/author):
ATTENTION CHICAGO BUSINESS OWNERS!
Community Development Grant
The City of Chicago helps support business and neighborhood vitality through Small, Medium, and Large Community Development Grant (CDG) awards.
This particular medium grant is for up between $300,001 and $5-million for business owners, property owners, nonprofit organizations, community developers, and entrepreneurs.
Funds can be used for office, retail, cultural, industrial, institutional, and mixed-use projects.
CDGs use proceeds from the 2024 Housing and Development Bond and other funding sources to support a variety of eligible, business-related investments that create and maintain jobs and quality-of-life improvements for local residents.
You can learn more about the grant timeline, funds, and more at the FAQ page.
If you truly are serious about learning how to get FREE FUNDING as well as resources, benefits, and other opportunities for the business side of the craft, then you need to make sure that if you do nothing else in 2025, you register for the: Grants, Funding & Other Opportunities for Under-Resourced Authors and Indie Publishers with Joylynn M. Ross and Brandy Miller.
The above is a four-hour pre-conference workshop for the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) PubU2025 in St. Paul Minnesota. If you don't want to attend the full PubU2025 conference, you can still sign up for Brandy's and my pre-conference workshop for only $99.
